Our scientific research projects provide important input for filling, evaluating and further developing supervisory boards. They support neutral, scientifically sound advisory services. At the same time, they provide the boards with reliable stimulus to strengthen their monitoring capability. As pioneers in the field of supervisory boards, we analyse relevant aspects of the effectiveness of monitoring bodies and thus add to our already extensive practical experience.
The “Aufsichtsrats-Score” is a methodically sound procedure for benchmarking supervisory boards and has established itself as the leading supervisory board study in Germany. On the basis of extensive data points, we analyse in detail formal enablers of effective supervisory board work, which are then combined to create an overall indicator. This allows conclusions to be drawn about the organisation and procedures of the boards examined, their composition and the transparency for shareholders.

The “High Performance Boards” study supplements the “Aufsichtsrats-Score” with an analysis of internal success factors. This refers to the qualitative or informal aspects of the supervisory board’s activities that supervisory board members themselves are perhaps not sufficiently aware of but which have a considerable influence on the efficiency of the supervisory board. In addition to the board members’ professional and personal suitability and their motivation in joining the board, this includes their attitudes and actual conduct, i.e. their communication skills and team spirit, how they see their role as well as communication and group processes.

In the “Compliance Culture” study, we examine the question of the characteristics and behaviours of top management bodies that support rule-compliant behaviour by employees and managers. After all, the functionality of compliance management systems is largely dependent on the role model function and role perception of the management board and supervisory board (“tone from the top”).
